Dear people,

I take it that "I'm into..." means "I'm interested in...", right?

Recently I wrote "I'm not much into religion" which should
mean that I'm not religious and don't have many skills
in this area.

Up to now I heard the phrase just for hobbies, e. g. from
someone who has a private pilot's license: "I'm into aviation".
But can you use it also for religion and the like?

Isn't the expression now on the worn-out side? It was nice to use when
it was new (OED has 1969, from /Rolling Stone/, "...and that's
something I'm very much into"), but I now--if I notice it at all--find
it a little irritating.

So, what would you prefer, besides formal phrases
like "I'm interested in..."?

I'm not too hot for. . .

"Music" hath (no) charms (if one is in a jocular mood). . .

With people, "he/you had me from 'hello'" might work.

But does "I'm not really into X" only mean "I'm not interested in X"?
I'd have thought "involved with", "interested by", "conversant with" and
several other meanings are involved.

Presumably, it originated from "get into" as in "to get into a new line
of work", " get into show business" etc.

It became a little weird and irritating when the "get" changed to "be",
because it clashes with "into" implying movement towards ...

Now the same thing has happened with "to get over (a bout of 'flu,
etc.)", which has given rise to "be over...", which doesn't make any
sense at all to me.

All totally dead, but I realize you were joking.

Anybody can say "I'm interested in...", plus it is old hat. The OP
wants something 21st century, I believe.
